August 2023

International Conference on Public Health 2023

Dr Simon Newstead gave an oral presentation at the the 9th International Conference on Public Health 2023 (ICOPH 2023) which was held on 3rd – 4th August 2023 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  Presentation title: 'Speaking the same language: Developing a glossary of terms for social prescribing' (delivered remotely).

The theme of this year's conference was: "Preparedness in Public Health: Advancing Technology, Equity and Strengthening Community" and brings together diverse researchers and case studies from all over the world.

Developing a Glossary of Terms for Social Prescribing (SP) – Dr Simon Newstead, Senior Research Assistant, University of South Wales 
Social prescribing (SP) uses a person-centred approach to support and empower an individual through engagement in community-based activities. It is an area that has shown rapid growth, with an associated proliferation of diverse and confusing terminology that creates barriers to engagement and communication. This presentation provides an overview of research conducted by the Wales School for Social Prescribing Research and Public Health Wales, which has culminated in a glossary of terms that seeks to clarify and standardise the language associated with SP.

HSR UK 2023 Conference

Dr Simon Newstead gave an oral presentation at the Health Services Research (HSR) UK Conference this year, entitled: 'Speaking the same language: Developing a glossary of terms for social prescribing'.  This year's event took place at the University of Birmingham 4-6 July 2023.

The HSR UK 2023 programme is multidisciplinary, with research presentations, posters, themed sessions and interactive workshops alongside plenaries from key opinion leaders in research, policy and practice.

“Future Proofing” Social Prescribing in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan – towards a common language

This free online event brought together practitioners and experts to offer insights into the future for social prescribing as we move closer to the adoption of a National Framework in Wales. It provided the opportunity to hear directly about the work of the Ministerial Group, and allowed connections to be made with the work that has been undertaken by colleagues from the Wales School for Social Prescribing Research (WSSPR) based at the University of South Wales in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan on the creation of a self-assessment ‘Development Matrix’. It was also an opportunity to see how the new online National Glossary of Terms for social prescribing can be explored and used in practice.

Presenting evidence to the Senedd

Professor Carolyn Wallace, Associate Director of PRIME Centre Wales, and Director of the Wales School for Social Prescribing Research presented evidence on social prescribing and mental health inequalities to the Senedd on 19th May.

Professor Wallace spoke about how community solutions and social prescribing can address mental health inequalities.

The Irish Sea Platform Consensus Event 3

The third of a series of networking events was held by the Wales School for Social Prescribing Research with partners in the Irish Sea Social Prescribing Network, with the aim of a set of shared developing research priorities for future collaboration and shared working.

Following the events, the WSSPR recorded a podcast looking at identifying social prescribing priorities across the Celtic Sea.
